Millwright Apprentice
In Grade 9 it’s hard to figure out what you want to be.
It’s a lot to think about, and really stressful – it makes it easier it you try a bunch of different things.
You’ll find something that you’re interested in. I took classes in art, woodworking and auto…I still like art (it helps me with my work now) and I LOVED auto.
I got really interested in autobody work and fabricating. I asked my teacher about my options – I really wanted to work with metal – and she told me what co-ops would be best for me.Now I’m almost finished my 6-month co-op as a millwright.
There are 20 millwrights here that I can learn from. I’m learning to weld, work on hydraulics, I fabricate things…today I finished a large metal basket for a machine. It had to look good, with no sharp edges.
After my co-op I’m going straight to work to get my license as a millwright; I don’t want a break.
I’m really excited about having a fulltime job – that’s what I want. I might do another apprenticeship after that, to be an electrician…
